Are We Web5 Yet?
Are We Web5 Yet?
Web5 is the idea of decentralized identity. I looked around and didn’t quite get it
The idea seems nice - an identity that you can use everywhere with no-one in control, so kinda like SSO, but not managed by Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc.
So the framework seems to be ready, but I don’t see how it’s going to catch off if no-one is using it.
I can create my Web5 identity, eg @neilboyd
by installing some software and running it somewhere.
But that doesn’t stop any other site/app from allowing other people to create the same identity on their site.
So as far as I’m concerned, just knowing that this idea exists isn’t helpful to me until it gets more widespread usage.
